Lions and other animals are bred in
captivity simply to act as living targets for so called 'hunters,'
who pay large fees to shoot a "trophy". Help stop this
horrific form of entertainment sport. If sanctuaries are not established
in South Africa in the very near future we will see a vast number
of lions and other cats being euthenased because there is no place
for them to go. It is our duty as animal welfarists to do what we
can to try to save at least some of these unfortunate animals and
give them an opportunity to live their lives out in dignity. For

Tribe of the Heart is a site which is focused on empowering
people who care, assisting in creating a compassionate future, honoring
tradition, nurturing this earth, and promoting the right ideas for
our times. Jenny Stein & James LaVeck Founders of "Tribe
of Heart" want to promote awareness of the inherent dignity
and value of all beings, and allow each of us to bring deeper meaning
and greater joy into our own lives. They have taken a bold step
to create films like: Peaceable Kingdom, which highlights
the public's concern about the health and environmental problems
associated with large-scale factory farming. This film explores
another angle of this unfolding story: the interconnected life journeys
of farm animals, former farmers, and animal rescuers struggling
against an "out of control" industrial system. Breaking
generations of silence in the farm community, Peaceable Kingdom
weaves together themes of respect, forgiveness, commitment, and
healing, offering a vision of a more peaceful world that is well
within our reach. This film is extremely moving, and I challenge
you to purchase it. The movie preview on their site made me break
down in tears with emotions I felt were like no others. I guarantee
you, it will change the way you look at a grocery store forever.

that animal rights supporters can do is to show others how they,
too, can easily help animals -- whether it's by sharing vegan food

aren't tested on animals, or just starting a dialogue with someone
who had never thought about animal suffering before. And that's
where their shirts do.

http://www.geocities.com/catahoularescue/
The Catahoula Rescue Networks goal is to help find caring
homes for this rare breed. Catahoulas have a mysterious and equally
intriguing history of being associated with Native peoples. Known
by many names, but mostly referred to as "Leopard dogs",
they are the only non-registered breed; (other than trial registrations),
known to have been domesticated with the closest lineage to wolf
as a result of early settlers. DeSoto brought dogs with him in the
1500's and as history goes, his dogs "mingled" with wolves
who served as companions to the Native's of southern states. Unlike
many pure breeds, Catahoulas have been kept relatively "pure"
to the present day by parties who use them as true working livestock,
hunting (ranging from squirrels to bears), as guard dogs and great
family companions. DeSoto's "war dogs" were so eager for
companionship, they tamed the Red Wolf producing a spotted hybrid
with the rare and special traits referred to as "a glass eye
or cracked eye". Others donned amber jewels, much like that
of today's wolves. The word 'Catahoula' is actually a combination
of two Choctaw words 'okhata', meaning lake, and 'hullo', meaning
beloved... or a *French transformation of the Choctaw Indian word
for their own nation, 'Couthaougoula' pronounced 'Coot-ha-oo-goo-la'.
It
is told, that Native Americans referred to the dogs with mixed eyes
as " spirit dogs", and considered them a gift and of great
honor. Their fur can range in color from silver to black from the
tortoise shell color to the most sacred colors with the broken pattern
coat of reds. My late Catahoula - EKU (eee- cooo), was one of the
most amazing animals to have graced my life. She had great understanding
in her glance, much empathy and just an outright gift for all kinds;
(people and animals). She became a therapy dog, and worked with
children with terminal illness. She touched the hearts of so many.
There were times I felt we could communicate without words. Most
people who met her always told me she was more like a person. She
was 16 when she passed and I miss her every day. You can see her
in her portrait with Lillie (who is now 14 years this Easter '06)
at: http://www.liznicholas.com/lillie_eku.htm
Sadly,
in rescue we are seeing way too many of these special dogs surface
for the wrong reasons.
People are dishonoring this wonder ancestry and these stunning dogs
are popping up at an alarming rate all over the country. If
you're interested in adopting a Catahoula, please check the Catahoula
Rescue Sites for more information. These are special dogs who deserve
special people. Catahoulas are not for everyone, as a working breed,
they require understanding, patience and lots of exercise. They
truly are "spirit dogs" and one of a kind! For

familiar and remember him as the man who has been in prison for

went to assist the Oglala Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Reservation
on June 26th, and the following year, was apprehended in Canada
and accused of the murder of two agents. The FBI presented the Canadian
court with fraudulent affidavits, and Peltier was returned to the
U.S. for trial. Leonard Peltier -- a great-grandfather, artist,
writer, & indigenous rights activist -- and a citizen of the
Anishinabe and Dakota/Lakota Nations, has to me become one of the
most remarkable representation of unjust treatment of any person
in history. His case has become a touchstone for issues of native
rights and criminal justice. Although limited by the prison environment,
